X’ One Design 20ft. 8 3/8in L.O.A. 1 1/4 tons weight.
A Bermudan rig day boat with a spinnaker for 2-4 people. Constructed in wood with a fixed keel. Designed by Alfred Westmacott in 1909.
170 are raced regularly in five locations around the Solent:
• Hamble • Itchenor • Lymington •
• Poole/Parkstone • Yarmouth •
The class is managed by the membership through the Class Association and is strictly one design. Over the years it has achieved a balance between adopting modern rigs and building techniques whilst ensuring the oldest boats remain competitive. X5 Madcap built in 1911 is competitive with X194 Alvine X built in 1994.
Racing throughout the season is organised by a local club at each of the locations listed, which we call Divisions. There are annual team races between Divisions and the annual championship, held each year at Cowes Week, and which in 2004 had 78 entries still racing on day 8 of the Regatta.
The X Class is very competitive but there is good camaraderie. It appeals to experienced sailors and younger sailors attracted by the quality of the racing. Yet the X is a safe boat for those with less experience
The Class is governed by the XOD Class Association whose rules and specifications are determined by its members in General Meetings. The Class is administered by an elected Class Captain and Committee comprising the Captains and Vice Captains of each Division and the Chairman of the Technical Advisory Committee (TAC).
The TAC is made up of representatives from each Division and supports the Committee by providing technical advice, carrying out specific investigations and projects as directed by the Committee, and keeping the Class generally informed of relevant developments
In order to participate in XOD Class racing, a boat must have a valid measurement certificate which needs to be re-validated on change of ownership.
An owner must be a member of the Class Association which is a pre-requisite for racing and requires an application for membership to the Class Secretary and a modest annual subscription to the Association.
A Class Handbook is produced annually. It is also necessary to be a member of one of the list of approved clubs that organises racing
